Attn RSS readers!

I recently discovered that I had um fucked up my settings a long time ago and only *one* post was making it into the feed.

So if I have posted more than once since you read your feed, you may not have read everything. This is probably good for you but just an FYI really!

Hmm comments are now on as an experiment. Commenting for the sake of commenting will end up with them turned off or more likely to start with some IP blocking. You know who you are. Everything is moderated so nothing will appear without my approval for the time being. Please use your name…

No Cars Go

Several hours later and after some hesitation I sat down and clicked play. I should note before I go on that it took over a year for me to really love Funeral. I was quite late into a lot of decent stuff in 2005 and this was one of them. It was not until early 2006 that I even listened to Funeral and then it took a while for me to fall for it. The Killer’s second album; Sam’s Town was not a hit the first time I heard it but after a few spins I love it.

Anyway I’m 6 songs in and it has not jumped out and grabbed me. That’s fine, I’m more than happy to give it several more listens, in fact I’ll be willing to bet it’ll get a lot of play over the next week.

So I’ve been playing behind the scenes here some more this evening. I use to build my sites from scratch, and it showed. Even in the Blogger world I was building the full pages and just inserting the required Blogger code. I stopped bothering with any of that when I moved to LiveJournal. It felt a little pointless. As I sit there though and look at some really great themes but not finding something to do quite what I want I’m fairly sure I want to spend some time at the least adapting a theme further or perhaps starting something from scratch. I want to use photos in someway here, so I want to work to a lot of position and I want to actually make it work cross browsers and more importantly something I never really touched on before, across resolution. It’ll be good practice for my mind too, I haven’t sat down and written code in a couple of years and I’ve forgotten most of it.

In a sense having my hosting company provide a script for installing this was a bad idea. I first learnt about chmod and directory permissions from installing some stuff on my first webspace. I’ll have to work on this a little more. And man, I tell you even on a small and stupid thing like this the reading of and understanding an error message and then going and fixing it, well it feels pretty damn good.

Yesterday afternoon I spent a lot of time thinking about what I wanted here. So in the evening I started to write and I’m still at it. I’m actually writing here because I was bored writing what I was writing. I’m very fussy like that. If I can’t write it down at the time then I don’t generally managed to get back in to the mood to write it or more so I don’t care to write it. I was actually composing sentences to type out on the bus home but when I came to write it, I had distractions.Still I’ve forced myself to write on the topics and I aim to keep it in draft format for at least a week or so and then to put it up here but as a living document. Much of it I’ve written before but as little stories or anecdotes, this time I want to put everything together.

I also want to add Twitter and last.fm and del.icio.us and put some sort of layout up here and put a proper photo gallery up. The best of what I have into something like a portfolio. In short I want to finally create a website for myself with full content. How long it’ll take me to do all this…who knows! This has been one of the main reasons for the move here. I’ve been thinking about how I’d approach the job market if that’s what life brings me over the next few months and while I can’t control search engines, I can direct them to some actual relevant content.

Other than that, I’m going to have a think about RSS. I like the concept of RSS, on paper it works really well. However I’ve never found an implementation that I’m happy with. I use Google Reader and it’s…okay. It’s not great, nothing I’ve tried has been great. I’m also slightly annoyed with myself at my overreliance on Google. Why did I suddenly start using my Gmail as my main email when I’ve had my domain for years and years. Well I do know why, spam filters (second only to AOL, I do not get spam on any of my AOL accounts. on Gmail I get maybe 2 a day through the filter. Pretty damn good but 0 still beats 2), speed (no other webmail I’ve seen is faster), interface (the right way to do ads) and most of all convience.

The latter is an RSS issue too. I have 3 computers that I use on a daily basis. I like desktop applications but I have never found a way to sync my mail to a central something. Webmail from my own mail account is horrible. I guess it’s pretty much the same for a lot of things. I’ve just never found something to handle multiple users well. Although to say something nice about AOL again shocks me as much as it shocks you, when they started saving AIM buddy lists on the host was a great day for multiple computer users.

So yeah RSS. There is a feed here at the moment, it comes with the Wordpress install. I couldn’t find a disable tick box easily so it’s on for now. It might stay on, I have been thinking about it. It would be helpful to pump into LJ so “Friends Pages” can carry on easily but I’m not so sure. Another thing for me to think about.

Another reason for the move is to take some more control. I don’t want to forget to tick or untick a box and have a helpful comment left. This is my little portion of the web and I don’t really care what you think :)

Nearly home time.
