I finally saw In Bruges when it got a limited release here this week. I had no idea it was out and so I was delighted to spot a showing as I was killing time yesterday afternoon.

I was crying with laughter are more than one point. Loved it.

Dont cry for me next door neighbour…

And so I find myself returning to the scene of the crime or at least another in it’s chain. It’s Tuesday afternoon and I’m sat in Pugg Mahone’s out in Carlton with a hair of the dog pint. Continue reading ‘Dont cry for me next door neighbour…’

Note to self.

When deciding it is time for an entirely new password, put more effort into remembering what you pick.

It can’t have taken me more than 30 efforts to get back into my Mac last night.

Oops.

Batman Always Wins

5:22 am Sunday, 24 August, 2008

So in Melbourne there is a Dame Edna Place and an AC/DC Lane. Obviously the Aussies like to name things after some local heroes.

There is also a Batman Lane, Batman Avenue, Batman Street, Batman Hill and a Batman Park (unfortunately not as cool as it sounds ) but it’s nice to see that even in the land down under Batman Always Wins.

Dancin’ through the underground

Ah Melbourne. So here I am and short of an overnight trip along the Great Ocean Road, this is where my Australian adventure will end, not with a bang but with a whimper.

I have another two weeks in the country and with nothing much to do. I can’t move my flights up, there isn’t any availability on my ticket class. So I’m stuck here. While I would not rank Melbourne in the same class as Chongqing, it’s feeling close at the moment. I feel like I’ve seen the entire city without even trying. Ok so I haven’t gone into the Zoo or the Botanical Gardens or the like but I’ve been everywhere else. So I don’t know how I’m going to fill two weeks. I’m going to get through some books of course (2 today alone and it’s not even 7pm) and I’m still going to take some photos and see a few museums and I’m going to head to the cinema a bit. It’s coming to the point where I’m making lists of movies that might appeal and thinking of seeing them.

I do like going to the cinema. It’s a nice touch of normality. It’s not as good as seeing things rarely throughout Asia but it’s nice to know that I can just catch a movie and get some popcorn. This week I’ve seen Pineapple Express which wasn’t as funny as the trailers made it out to be but I still enjoyed it and then yesterday I saw Tropic Thunder which was about as funny as the trailers made it out to be. Downey Jr. steals every scene he’s in but he can’t stop Tom Cruise (yeah, I had no idea either) stealing the entire movie. Anyways both did exactly what I wanted from them; made me laugh for a couple of hours. Escapism, sometimes it’s all it’s cracked up to be.

Now a few weeks ago I mentioned that I needed to drink some Guinness in order to get a couple of t-shirts in an Irish pub in Sydney. I failed at this, in fact I still have the loyalty card to prove my epic fail. I managed 3 of the 16 required. The other night however PJ O’Brien’s only required 4 pints for a Guinness hat. It’s quite a nice hat too. I must admit that I only ordered the fourth pint so I could get the hat but then the band started. There were your average couple of Irish lads playing some tunes. A guitar and a fiddle and a selection of Irish classics (though notably no U2) and it was just what I needed. There was a small but pretty lively crowd around and after I moved up to the bar to be able to see better the pints just kept flowing. I have to say that I didn’t feel particularly pissed at any stage, it was a long enough evening and it just flowed nicely. Around pint number 8 I got a glass of water and I kept getting them to refill that for me and so that helped a lot. I’ll admit that I slept until 12 the next day but I didn’t have any sort of a hangover which was a very nice surprise.

I’m sat in the food court at Melbourne Central. I’ve just had some dinner and they handily provide a number of laptops stations (yay power supply!) and free wirelress (boo - never working!). Looking out the window I can see straight into the second floor of the building across the way where there is what appears to be ballroom dancing lessons going on. It’s somewhat distracting, everytime I pause and look up these people are just whirling around.

I have no plans for the evening. Shocking I know. I can a) go to the cinema or b) go to the pub. Neither really appeal right now to be honest. I would like to go and sit somewhere quietly and read for a while (short of finding free net access). After running up about, $30 in internet access in the past week, due mainly to boredom, I fear I cannot justify paying for many more internet cafes. I did find a nice spot which provides four hours of access for free every day but it’s limited to a 250mb download and I didn’t keep an eye on what I was doing. Oops. On the subject though, new Bloc Party album out today. I enjoyed the first album and wasn’t so keen on the second but it grew on me. Having seen them live a couple of times last year at festivals, they are 1000 times better live, I still have a lot of time for them and I’ve just started to take a listen.

As I was saying, no plans for this evening. There’s meant to be a small Irish pub near to my hostel that I want to see if I can find. I don’t know what tonight is going to be like though, I really don’t want a packed pub (unless there is some good music on) I’d must rather just have a quiet drink and several hours reading.

I wonder if there is anyway I could convince my travel agent that my ticket would let me fly to New Zealand via Liverpool?

The Sultan’s Elephant was absolutely magnificent and with some of the same folks involved in this, it bodes well!
